Obituary for Gerald E. English

Caledonia — Gerald (Jerry) E. English, 90, of Caledonia, New York, passed away peacefully at Eastside SNF, Warsaw, NY.

At Jerry’s request there will be no funeral or memorial service. He was cremated. His remains will be buried in Dubuque, Iowa. The family is being assisted by Alhart Funeral Home of Caledonia.

Gerald Edward English was born in Dubuque, Iowa on April 10, 1932 to Joseph L. and Genevieve M. (Nejedly) English. He married Beatrice L Lotzy on April 10, 1976 in Cheyenne, Wyoming. Beatrice died in 2015. He graduated from Dubuque Senior High School in Dubuque, Iowa in 1950. He worked for Ertl Toy Company in Dubuque. He was a Korean War Navy veteran serving from 1952-56 as an Aerographers Mate on the USS Kearsarge CVA33. He attended Iowa State University and the University of Iowa. He joined the National Weather Service in 1958 and was stationed in International Falls Minnesota until 1970. He was stationed in Madison, Wisconsin from 1970 to 1975. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin with a B.S. in Meteorology. From Madison he lived in Cheyenne, Wyoming until 1977. He lived in Bismarck, North Dakota until 1983 when he became Station Chief of the National Weather Service office at Rochester, New York. He retired in 1994. He was a member of the American Meteorological Society. He was recognized for his many accomplishments as a meteorologist by the NWS, and the communities in which he served. Gerald was a Master Gardener, and loved gardening of all kinds. He enjoyed reading and his book club. He also enjoyed birding, hunting, fishing, and playing cards with his friends in the card club.

The family thanks Gerald’s neighbors and the staff at Eastside SNF for their support and the care they gave Gerald.

Gerald is survived by a brother, Dennis (Karen), of Coal Valley, Illinois, and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Beatrice, brother Michael, and sister Diane Karburg.
