Obituary for Althea Franke Howe (Stoddard)

Althea F. Howe passed away peacefully on November 25, 2020 at the age of 98 in Greece, NY. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and aunt. Althea was born on the family farm in Caledonia, NY and lived most of her life there and in the Village of Caledonia. On November 16, 1940, she married the love of her life, Walter R. Howe and they enjoyed 63 years together. They had two children, Carolyn and Roger. Althea worked for Allen-Bailey Tag, the Jell-O Company, and for Bausch & Lomb. They were very active members of the Order of the Eastern Star for many years and they travelled extensively around the state.
Carolyn and Roger remember the days on the farm, summer vacations, and the Sunday drives, on which they travelled god-forsaken back roads for hours, always ending up at the Elm Dairy for ice cream - all cherished memories now. The grandchildren have fond memories of many fun-filled overnights and weekends at their house, watching Shirley Temple movies and Wheel of Fortune with Grandma, and the pastel mint candy! When they were both widowed and living together, Althea and her sister Jane spent many, many enjoyable hours shopping.
Althea was predeceased by her husband Walter, her brother Wesley Stoddard, and her two sisters Virginia Manning and Jane Crosby. She is survived by her brother Harland (Linda) Stoddard; children Carolyn (Theodore) McKeown of Mays Landing, New Jersey and Roger (Diane) Howe of Greece, NY; grandchildren Melissa (Kenneth) McFarlane of Canandaigua, NY, Aaron (Allison) Kissel of Swedesboro, New Jersey, Elizabeth (Samuel) Chanowich of Flemington, New Jersey, and Jessica (Quentin) Dean of Caledonia, NY; and great-grandchildren Rachel and Dylan Chanowich, Lily Dean, and Owen and Jackson Kissel, as well as many nieces and nephews, with special mention of Deborah Miller and her husband Richard, who spent many hours with Althea.
Calling hours will be held on Friday, December 4, 2020 from 4:00 - 6:00 pm at Alhart Funeral Home, 3068 Main St, Caledonia, NY 14423 and the funeral will be held at the funeral home on Saturday, December 5, at 2:00 pm. Masks are required per CDC guidelines. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her name to the First Presbyterian Church, 3080 Main St, Caledonia, NY 14423.
