Obituary for Harold J. "Abe" Sickles

Harold J. (“Abe”) Sickles

July 7, 1932 - November 5, 2020

Abe passed away peacefully in his home on November 5, 2020 at the age of 88. He was a lifelong resident of Caledonia and the husband of Mary (Keenan) Sickles for over 63 years.

Abe was a proud veteran of the U.S. Army having served as a jump school instructor in the 82nd Airborne. He was a building contractor for 50 years and a leader in several organizations including the Matthew Cleary American Legion Post #255, the Caledonia Fire Department, and the Caledonia-Mumford School Board. During his life, Abe was a member of the Caledonia Country Club, the Genesee Valley Hunt, and the Mumford Sportsman Club and enjoyed skiing and traveling across the United States. After retiring, Abe and Mary spent several winters in Bradenton, Florida where Abe was a member of the Tara Golf and Country Club and the Manatee County Model Flying Club. He took great pride in his lawn and garden, Cal-Mum football, and most especially, his beloved grandchildren.

In addition to his wife, he leaves behind five children, Jim (Sarah) Sickles, Steven (Amy) Sickles, Shannon Sickles, Susan (Carl) McQuillen, and Kelly Sickles; nine grandchildren, James Sickles, Kayla Sickles, Austin Sickles, Melanie Chapman, Molly Hickey, Thomas McQuillen, Ryan McQuillen, Robert McQuillen, and Everett Sickles; two great-grandchildren, Blake Sickles and Tildon Chapman; and many special friends and relatives.

Due to the pandemic, a service and interment at St. Columba Cemetery in Caledonia will be privately held with a celebration of life to be planned in the future. Memorials may be made to the Caledonia War Veterans Memorial, 3155 Church Street, Caledonia, NY 14423 or the Big Springs Historical Society of Caledonia, P.O. Box 41, Caledonia, NY 14423.
