Obituary for Olive Williams (Bell)

January 28, 2019 at age 96. Her service will be held Saturday, February 2, 2019 at 2 PM at the Second Baptist Church, 957 George Street, Mumford. Private Interment
Olive Williams was a native of Chicago, Illinois and came to New York with her family in 1939. The Family settled in Avon and later moved to Geneseo, New York. She became a member of Second Baptist Church, Mumford New York pastored by the late Rev. Dr. Charles A. Thurman and now the current Pastor Rev. Sean Tucker. Where she was a chairman of the New Membership class and scribe for the Women’s Ministries (formerly the Women’s Alliance)
After 22 years, she retired from the former Convalescent Home for children (now Crestwood Children’s Center). During her career at the Convalescent home as a Socio-therapist she was awarded a full scholarship to MCC/Human Services Program where she graduated with honors and later taught a class for a semester.
She also pursued studies at St. John Fisher College in Diversity and Aging; Genesee Ecumenical Ministries (GEM) and Lay School Theology and Ministries.
She worked part-time for the Rochester Alzheimer’s Association as the Minority Outreach Project Coordinator where she formed an Advisory Committee; facilitated a support group and gave educational presentation in the community. She graduated from a 3 year program
(Program for Education and Action Responsible Leadership-P.E.A.R.L) at Colgate Rochester Divinity School, in 1995 and was offered a part-time position as the On-Site Administrative Assistant for P.E.A.R.L. She also worked part-time as a secretary for the Black Church Studies program and the Community Liaison office at Colgate Rochester Divinity School.
Other Community involvement included: AARP Rochester Chapter 4598; Zion Hill Foundation; American Baptist Churches; Park Place Senior Adult Day Care; United Church ministries; Martin Luther king Jr. Commission; Big Sister at Hillside Children’s Center; Faith Community Health Awareness Center (now Rosa Wims Wellness Center); Monroe County “CROP WALK FOR HUNGER” and as a Chaplin for AKOMA an African American Women’s Gospel choir
When She wasn’t volunteering she was reading her Oprah Magazines or watching Oprah and The Chew.
She was predeceased by her parents Roy and Ruth Bell, brother Vincent (Mamie) Bell, sister Marguerite (Franklin) Lucas, daughter Olive Ruth Bedford, Niece Bonnie Lucas-Carr, and Nephew Gregory A. Lucas.
She is survived by Nephew Gary F. Lucas, Nieces Marguerite (Shelley) Lucas and Debra Lucas, and many Great nieces and nephews and very dear friends.
