I worked with Paul over 18 years ago and something had prompted a memory of him yesterday. As a result, I googled him to see what he might be up to. I'm very sorry to hear of your loss last May.
I was very early in my career at Trust Insurance when he came over with the Liberty crew (Allen Lew, Claudia Cunniff). This was pretty late in his career. In fact, I believe Allen brought him out of retirement for a few years.
Poor Paul was subjected to a bunch of young Gen X'ers like myself. He proved to be a fantastic role model to all that worked with him, and I still carry lessons from his influence that I apply to those I lead today. He treated people of all experience levels with respect and made appreciation of people a priority, such as with a handwritten note or compliment. It's a lost art, sadly, but I try to remember the example he set.
We had some fun with Paul too, mostly in the area of teaching an old dog new tricks. While the 20 somethings were using Microsoft Excel and "cutting and pasting", Paul was literally cutting up excerpts of papers/reports and glueing them to sheets of paper and photocopying them. I also recall a time he kept hitting print, but to the wrong printer, causing a pile of printouts pages several inches deep unintentionally. I must clarify we were laughing with him, not at him, as nobody was laughing harder than he was.
Everyone at the office loved him, men and women of all ages. He made quite an impression in a short time with us, and we were all better for getting a brief chance to work with him. As this note can attest, his influence continues.
